Jazz meets Cuba

JAZZ AWARD 2003 / 2005

With their album “Classic meets Cuba“ Klazz Brothers & Cuba Percussion demonstrate how excellently Cuban rhythms and Jazz go together. In their second joint project “Jazz meets Cuba“ the quintet generates a distinct crossover sound that gives honour to its numerous enthusiastic jazz devotees with popular jazz standards and songs of renowned Cuban composers. “Jazz meets Cuba“, released in 2003 with Sony Classical, matched the same outstanding success of “Classic meets Cuba“. Only a few weeks after the album’s release, “Jazz meets Cuba“ was awarded the JAZZ AWARD in 2003 followed by the JAZZ AWARD in 2005.

"Jazz meets Cuba“ is a tribute to the grand masters of jazz like George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. In combination with Cuban rhythms, unforgettable jazz standards gain a completely new sound, full of Latin American gumption. “Jazz meets Cuba” sometimes transforms into Cuba meets jazz as the program also contains Cuban songs in jazzy style – amongst them music of the “first hour”. This music captures the moment when the Klazz Brothers and & Cuba Percussion played together for the first time in a spontaneiously arranged session at Theatro Roldan in Havana, Cuba. Their repertoire included songs of great Cuban musicians like Frank Emilio ("Los Amigos“ and "Mondongo“). Beside the arrangements of Tobias Forster,Kilian Forster and Tim Hahn, the album also comprises compositions by Tobias Forster like “Samba Zamba“ und “Elegia“ – with these the quintet pays homage to the South American continent with its life-affirming samba, salsa and bossa nova rhythms.
