Symphonic Salsa

World-renowned classical melodies paired with Caribbean rhythms in a great symphonic style

On the occasion of their third project, Klazz Brothers & Cuba Percussion appear on the scene together with a large symphonic orchestra, leading the audience into symphonic dimensions. “Symphonic Salsa“ advances the prize-winning debut project “Classic meets Cuba“ to an impressive symphonic form. The orchestra assumes a position far beyond the scope of an accompanying role. The symphonic program of “Classic meets Cuba consists of operas enhanced by jazz and traditional Cuban music. A symbol of Cuban music, salsa, is central in this program. By merging the Caribbean feeling for rhythm with European melodics and harmony, salsa is virtually predestined for the crossover projects of the German-Cuban quintet, which displays a sparkling vitality along with delight in rhythm and dance. With these musical ingredients of great classical operas are revived in an impressive and refreshing way. Next to the symphonic transcriptions of some of the peaces from “Classic meets Cuba“ like “Mambozart“, “Salsa No. V“, and Johann Sebastian Bach’s adapted “Air“, arrangements like “The Blue Danube“ by Johann Strauss, Peter Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy” , „The Nutcracker” as well as the “Dream of Love” by Franz Liszt complement the album. The compositions for orchestra originate partly from Sverre Indris Joner, the leading composer and arranger of Latin American, particularly Cuban music, in Norway. Moreover the former pianist of Klazz Brothers, Tobias Forster, contributes to the arrangements as well.

In 2004, “Symphonic Salsa“ premiered in collaboration with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Roger Epple, the highest ranking conductor of the Opera Halle. For the recording of the same-titled album “Symphonic Salsa“, that was released with Sony Classical in 2005, the quintet collaborated with the Munich Radio Orchestra and again with Epple. Since then serveral concerts have been given with other renowed orchestras like the Southwest German Philharmonic Orchestra of Constance, the National Symphony Orchestra Taiwan and the NDR Radio Philharmnonic Orchestra. The Klazz Brothers program, "Symphonic Salsa" has been telecasted many times. As a result excerpts have been broadcasted in the show “Eine Große Nachtmusik”, presented by the Second German Television under the moderation of Senta Berger respectively Götz Alsmann.
