Bruno Böhmer Camacho

Bruno Böhmer Camacho grew up in a German-Colombian family in Barranquilla, a city on the coast of Colombia. His maternal grandfather was Angel Maria Camacho y Cano, a well-known Colombian musician, composer and promoter of Caribbean music. From an early age, Bruno began taking lessons from his mother, Lyra Mercedes Camacho, who was also a concert pianist. He studied music theory, composition, and arrangement from German pianist, Gunther Renz. At the age of 9, Bruno founded and lead the Latin Sampling ensemble comprised of young jazz stars like himself. The Latin Sampling ensemble became internationally renowned though its jazz festival appearances at the Fesujazz Festival, Sierra Mar y Jazz Festival, among others. Bruno maintained a strong relationship with his German heritage through the influence of his German father. This connection was strengthened when he won first place in the Jazz Youth Junior Composition in Bonn. A year later, he received a scholarship and began to study at the renowed Folkwang School in Essen. Bruno had the opportunity to study under the instruction of Peter Herborn and Peter Walter Thomas Hufschmidt. In May, 2006, Bruno was awarded the Folkwang prize for the university’s best jazz student and in 2008 his trio received the award for best ensemble. Soon after, Bruno received a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied compostion, music and management. There, he performed and recorded with vibraphonist Victor Mendoza and the Berklee All Star Band. During his studies, Bruno Böhmer also worked on various projects and productions with high profiled jazz musicians like Louis Roy, Stevie Woods, Cesar Perez, Nene Vasquez, Noca Cuba and the European Jazz Ensemble. With his quintet, Latin Sampling, Bruno produced an album ‘Secrets’ in 2006 with Ecuadorian producer and sound engineer Daniel Orejuela Fores Production Company Alla. Later, Bruno founded the Bruno Böhmer Camacho Trio with long time friends and band mates, Juan Camillo Villa (bass) and Rodrigo Villalón (drums). Two years ago, they published their debut album, ‘Herencias’. In this album Bruno includes compositions of by his grandfather and a wonderful interpretation of ‘Caravan’.
Bruno Böhmer Camacho is also the pianist for the German-Cuban band Klazz Brothers & Cuba Percussion, a group well known for combining classical music with elements of jazz and Latin rhythms. This year he goes on tour with this group and participates in their next album production, ‘Symphonic Salsa’.
